Family Contribution: Fred Martin (husband of
Emilie, space 3) was born 21 Feb., 1888 in Grossliebenthal, Odessa district, Ukraine. His parents
were Wilhelm Martin and Friederike Horch. He emigrated
at the age of 11, along with his parents and siblings,
to a homestead in McHenry County, North Dakota. He was
married and widowed as a young man, then married Emilie.
In 1914 or 1915 they returned to take over his family’s
farm in North Dakota, where they lived until 1925, when
they sold the farm and moved to Sherwood. They
purchased land at the crest of Willamette Street in that
city, later purchasing the Campbell home and more land
in 1935. They owned a dance hall, skating rink, and
grocery and feed stores in Sherwood and were chicken and
black raspberry farmers. Fred served as a Sherwood City
Councilman during the 1940’s. Giving home-building lots
to their children who remained in Sherwood, they lived
in their large home, surrounded by homes of their
children and grandchildren, until their deaths in 1982
and 1983. |
